Welcome the Holiday Season with BREC’s Family-Friendly Christmas Events
Cold air is here, festive lights are going up and BREC invites families and friends of all ages to enjoy a host of holiday-themed programs and events throughout the season.
Experience the spirit of the season at ZooLights, a Baton Rouge tradition, at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Visitors will enjoy the lights and larger-than-life light displays of all their favorite zoo animals and holiday traditions. Stop by and visit the zoo from Nov. 24-Dec. 30 from 5:30-8 p.m. to enjoy the evening light displays. The fee is $5 for adults and teens, $4 for seniors, $3 for children ages 2-12 and free for children ages 1 and younger. Zoo grounds close at 9 p.m. each day and will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For more information, call 225-775-3877.
Welcome the holiday season with a unique nighttime family bike ride up the levy from Farr Park to downtown Baton Rouge to be a part of Baton Rouge’s Downtown Christmas Lighting Celebration at BREC’s Reindeer Ride on Dec. 1 from 5:30-8 p.m. Participants will leave the levy trail head and join in a colorful bike parade through the downtown area, participate in the many fun evening activities and return together. Enjoy a park lighting ceremony, candle light caroling and a host of other family activities for all ages to enjoy at BREC’s Eighth Annual Caroling in the Park at City-Brooks Community Park on Dec. 8 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Enjoy hot chocolate, games and more, then stick around after the ceremony for a special visit from Santa. Watch others compete, or show off your own extreme skills at BREC’s Toys for Tots Ollie Challenge & Highest BMX Hop on Dec. 9 from noon-4 p.m. at Perkins Road Community Park, BREC’s “Extreme Sports Park.” This annual toy drive benefits Toys for Tots during the holiday season, so come out, watch the competition, donate a toy and make a child happy this holiday season. BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation will host its annual Creole Christmas and Holiday Fair on Dec. 10 from 1-6 p.m., featuring seasonal decorations in the historic house, traditional songs in French and Spanish sung by local school children, period demonstrations, folk crafts and an annual bonfire to welcome Papa Noel. Experience the holidays as Santa makes his annual stop for the Santa Road Show at Gus Young Park on Dec. 16 from noon- 2 p.m. Bring your cameras to take memorable family photos as your children tell Santa what they want for the holidays.
