Come Enjoy a Spectacular View of the Perseid Meteor Shower This Thursday at Highland Road Park Observatory
BREC invites families and friends to view the Perseid meteor shower on Thursday, Aug. 12 from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Highland Road Park Observatory, 13800 Highland Road.
The Perseids are one of the major meteor showers of the year, caused by debris from the Comet Swift-Tuttle. Come to the observatory, learn about meteors and see if you can spot some Perseid Earthgrazers or colorful meteors that skim the top of Earth's atmosphere. Viewers might even spot a fireball - meteors that shine brighter than the stars and planets.
Although telescopes are not needed to view the Perseids, the observatory will have a telescope available for leisurely gazing at other celestial objects. Be sure to pay close attention as Perseid meteoroids hit the atmosphere traveling 60 kilometers per second - that is over 130,000 miles per hour.
The observatory is brought to the public by BREC, LSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society.
