BREC's Forest Community Park to Re-open Oct. 23The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge invites the public to attend the grand re-opening ceremony for Forest Community Park, 13900 S. Harrell's Ferry Road, on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon.
A full morning of events to commemorate the park's grand re-opening will include games, music, food and fun. Visit brec.org/forest for a complete listing of activities. Residents, parents and children are encouraged to attend this community event.
Acquired in 1956, Forest Community Park comprises 114-acres and is considered one of the community's oldest recreation facilities. Improvements made to the park include: upgraded ball field restrooms and concessions, upgraded recreation center and restrooms, new children's playground and restrooms, new splash pad, seven picnic pavilions, two gateway pavilions, eight refurbished tennis courts, three new tennis courts, renovated tennis center, three renovated ball fields, new large and small dog park, fishing pond and pier, lighted multi-use paths and additional environmentally-sustainable parking lots.
A special thanks to Raising Cane's for their contribution of $70,000 toward the large and small dog parks, equipped with watering stations, as well as Wal-Mart for their donation that made the fishing pier possible.
The Forest Community Park Master Plan outlined these improvements. Developed through an extensive public input process, this plan determined East Baton Rouge Parish residents' opinion of existing facilities and their vision for park renovations. The Master Plan was completed in Sept. 2007 by BROWN+DANOS landdesign, inc.
The Imagine Your Parks plan passed by EBRP voters in 2004, made the funding for these renovations possible. The money is dedicated to the refurbishment of neighborhood parks and development of 12 community parks as well as improvements to special facilities, walking trails, aquatic facilities and maintenance.
BREC's Planning and Engineering Department led the park's renovations. BREC's Capital Improvements Department completed the renovations to the buildings. J. Reed Constructors managed the $3.9 million construction project. BROWN+DANOS landdesign, inc. served as the landscape architects. Daniel T. Calongne & Associates served as the electrical engineers and ABMB Engineers, Inc. served as the civil engineers.
Forest Community Park is the latest in the series of community parks in EBRP to undergo major renovations. Forest now joins Anna T. Jordan Community Park, City ??Brooks Community Park, Howell Community Park and Perkins Road Community Park. The Imagine Your Parks strategic plan includes six additional community parks.
