BREC Presents Calliope Puppet Shows and Family Workshops

Calliope Puppets brings family puppet shows and workshops to Milton J. Womack Park, 6201 Florida Blvd., on Feb. 25 and March 24.

Mark your calendars for two great Saturdays with puppet master Karen Konnerth, founder and owner of Calliope Puppets in New Orleans. BREC invites everyone to enjoy this fun day of family fun with a free puppet show followed by the Make-A-Puppet Workshop.

A Decentralized Arts Funding Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge in cooperation with the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and Louisiana State Arts Council supports this program.

On Feb. 25, patrons will enjoy an adult workshop entitled "Story Building Through Shadow Puppetry" from 9-11 a.m. In this session, participants work collaboratively to create and develop original themed stories and bring them to life using shadow puppetry. From 1-1:45 p.m., Calliope Puppets will perform "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." This magical presentation features a striking array of puppetry techniques, including introductory puppets that appear from within a cape worn by the puppeteer, traditional hand puppets, rod-puppet flying birds and shadow puppet fish. The audience participates in reciting simple poems as they assist in the working of magic spells. Children make shadow puppets of imaginary creatures on the shadow puppet screen from 2-3:30 p.m.

Activities on March 24 include an adult workshop entitled "Expressing Emotions and Action Through Hand Puppets" from 9-11 a.m. In this session, participants learn how expressive a hand puppet can be through theater games and exercises. Everyone will make a hand puppet to use in improvised skits. Calliope Puppets presents three tales inspired by their travels in Central and South America from 1-1:45 p.m. This dynamic show is fun for all ages. Each child will make a simple paper rod puppet with its own stage house from 2-3:30 p.m.

BREC encourages everyone to come out with lawn chairs and picnic baskets and get ready for an exciting afternoon with the puppets.
