Welcome the Season with BREC’s Family-Friendly Holiday Events
Cold air is here, festive lights are going up and BREC invites families and friends of all ages to enjoy a host of holiday-themed programs and events throughout the season.
Experience the spirit of the season at ZooLights, Baton Rouge’s newest holiday tradition at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Visitors will enjoy the lights and larger-than-life light displays of all their favorite zoo animals and holiday traditions. Stop by and visit the zoo from Nov. 28-Dec. 30 from 5:30-8 p.m. to enjoy the evening light displays. The fee is $5 for adults and teens, $4 for seniors, $3 for children ages 2-12 and free for children ages 1 and younger. Zoo grounds close at 9 p.m. each day and will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For more information, call 225-775-3877.
Watch others compete, or show off your own skateboarding skills at BREC’s Toys for Tots Ollie Challenge on Dec. 12 from 6-9 p.m. at Perkins Road Community Park, BREC’s “Extreme Sports Park.” With the help from local skate-shops Urban Nine and Rukus, this annual toy drive benefits Toys for Tots during the holiday season. Looking for other competition during the festive season? Grab your clubs and your golfing buddies and register for BREC’s Holiday 3-Player Scramble on Dec. 5 at Beaver Creek Golf Course. Tee-off begins at 9 a.m., and the fee is $150 per team, which includes carts and lunch. For more information and registration, call the Beaver Creek course at 225-658-6338.
BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation will host its annual Creole Christmas event on Dec. 13 from 3-6 p.m., featuring seasonal decorations in the historic house, traditional songs in French and Spanish sung by local school children, folk crafts, the annual bonfire and more. Experience the holidays as Santa makes his annual stops at three locations this year for the Santa Road Show. Bring your cameras to take memorable family photos as your children tell Santa what they want for the holidays. Enjoy holiday games, crafts, marshmallow roasting and other fun activities for all ages at the following locations:

Enjoy a park lighting ceremony, candle light caroling and a host of other family activities for all ages to enjoy at BREC’s Sixth Annual Caroling in City Park on Dec. 10 from 5:30-8 p.m. This annual event is co-sponsored by Friends of City Park, Knock Knock Children’s Museum, Mid City Redevelopment Alliance and AmeriHealth Caritas. To cap-off the holiday festivities, BREC is offering parents the opportunity to finish last-minute holiday shopping, enjoy a date-night, or just take a break during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season by bringing their children to numerous BREC parks for Santa Drop-n-Shop on Dec. 21 from 5:30-10 p.m. This evening program is for children in grades K-sixth and is $14 per child, which includes snacks, drinks and a dinner. For children participating in the holiday camps at these locations, an additional fee of $14 can be paid to stay through 10 p.m. Children will be entertained with holiday-themed recreation games, socialization with their peers, crafts and more at one of the following locations: Alsen Park, Antioch Boulevard Park, Church Street Park, Highland Road Community Park, Jackson Park, Maplewood Park, North Sherwood Forest Community Park, Plank Road Park, Perkins Road Community Park and Womack Park.
