Welcome the Season with BREC’s Family-Friendly Holiday Events

Cold air is here, festive lights are going up and BREC invites families and friends of all ages to enjoy a host of holiday-themed programs and events throughout the season.

Experience the spirit of the season at ZooLights, Baton Rouge’s newest holiday tradition at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Visitors will enjoy the lights and larger-than-life light displays of all their favorite zoo animals and holiday traditions. Stop by and visit the zoo from Nov. 28-Dec. 30 from 5:30-8 p.m. to enjoy the evening light displays. The fee is $5 for adults and teens, $4 for seniors, $3 for children ages 2-12 and free for children ages 1 and younger. Zoo grounds close at 9 p.m. each day and will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For more information, call 225-775-3877.

Watch others compete, or show off your own skateboarding skills at BREC’s Toys for Tots Ollie Challenge on Dec. 12 from 6-9 p.m. at Perkins Road Community Park, BREC’s “Extreme Sports Park.” With the help from local skate-shops Urban Nine and Rukus, this annual toy drive benefits Toys for Tots during the holiday season. So come out, watch the skaters compete, donate a toy and make a child happy this holiday season. For more information, call 225-272-9200, ext. 570.

Looking for other competition during the festive season? Grab your clubs and your golfing buddies and register for BREC’s Holiday 3-Player Scramble on Dec. 5 at Beaver Creek Golf Course. Tee-off begins at 9 a.m., and the fee is $150 per team, which includes carts and lunch. For more information and registration, call the Beaver Creek course at 225-658-6338.

BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation will host its annual Creole Christmas event on Dec. 13 from 3-6 p.m., featuring seasonal decorations in the historic house, traditional songs in French and Spanish sung by local school children, folk crafts, the annual bonfire and more. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 225-343-4955.
