BREC Accepting Bids for Sale of Obsolete Land
Lafitte Hill Property is 2.26 acres near Highland Road Community Park
As part of its Imagine Your Parks strategic plan, BREC conducted a thorough efficiency evaluation of its entire system to identify obsolete land and facilities. One of the properties declared obsolete is 2.26 acres of land located at 628 Jean Lafitte Avenue in the Lafitte Hills Subdivision near Highland Road Community Park.
BREC will accept sealed bids for the two lots until 2:30 p.m. on February 17, 2016. The lowest minimum bid that will be accepted is $425,000, an amount suggested by the Latter and Blum Real Estate Agency after an appraisal of the property. Anyone who wishes to place a bid must pick up complete bid documents from BREC's purchasing department or from Latter and Blum's offices which are located at 10455 Jefferson highway, Suite 200, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
The Lafitte Hills property was donated to BREC in 1991 but was never developed into a neighborhood park due to lack of interest from nearby residents. Proceeds from the sale will be used to enhance the park system at the site of the original donor's choosing.
"While BREC has spent more than a decade building much-needed new facilities and renovating other aging ones, this obsolete land evaluation has been a vital component of the Imagine Your Parks plan," said BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight. "BREC owns more than 180 parks and they all must be maintained at a high level whether they are being used as park land or not. In order to maximize the investment by taxpayers, we are working to ensure that our efforts are directed toward properties that add value to our community and offer a high level of recreational opportunity to our residents. Where that is not the case, we will allow the land to be put to a better use," said McKnight.
In all, BREC has labeled 20 properties obsolete. Eastgate Park has been removed from the system and Terrace Street is now being operated by the non-profit group Front Yard Bikes. BREC will continue to evaluate the remaining properties to determine the best outcome whether it is another sale, a partnership opportunity or giving the land back to its original owner.
