57.48 acres
Blackwater Conservation Area, which opened on March 26, 2002, is BREC's newest nature park. It is located near the intersection of Hooper Road and Blackwater Road alongside the Comite River.
The area was once an abandoned and neglected dirt mine, but is now a peaceful riverside retreat from the hustle of the city.
Two large fishing lakes are located on the property that has been revived with 7,000 new trees representing native species such as: Bald Cypress, Tupelo Gum, Cottonwood, River Birch, Red Mulberry, Persimmon, Pines and Oaks. In addition, 1.1 miles of walking trails run throughout the park.
For more information on the Blackwater Conservation Area, please visit The Corps of Engineers website for the Blackwater project or call BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp at 225-757-8905.
