BREC's Sports Academy will be registering young players for its Fall House Basketball League in late August (date and times TBA). A series of clinics will be conducted in preparation for league play. Several teams will be coached by former LSU Basketball players and current LSU and Southern players will conduct the clinics. League cost is $40 per child and is open to boys and girls ages 6-14. Located in downtown Baton Rouge, BREC's Sports Academy is reputed for producing some of the finest young basketball talent in Baton Rouge. Players like Indiana's Keith Smith, who won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1987 NCAA Final Four, and current and former LSU ballers Glen Davis, Collis Temple III, Garret Temple, Tasmin Mitchell and Tyrus Thomas all played and practiced at BREC's Sports Academy in grade school and high school.
The Academy features several opportunities for grade-school aged athletes and older to improve their physical conditioning and practice their basketball skills. Free-play basketball is available for those 18-years and older Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The evenings are reserved for Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Basketball skill clinics are conducted by center supervisor Edward Robinson and former LSU guard Randy Devall on Tuesday evenings. The Academy also hosts after school tutoring for grade-school and high school aged students.
Boxing for those 8-years old through adult is conducted and supervised Monday-Friday from 6-7:45 p.m. and the center also features a weight room that is open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday for a nominal fee of $10 per month.
