Activities for Adults

The BREC adult leisure program has expanded, adding new centers, new programs and new participants. We want to help put fun in your life by providing opportunities that you may not have had time for before now.  Adult leisure programs are diverse and widely distributed throughout the parish.  All centers have supervisors who implement programs that include some variety of exercise, community events, arts & crafts, sports, hospitality, learning topics, tours, and holiday parties. Take a look at our center calendars and register for activities that appeal to you by calling the nearest center.

Adult Tea Dances
BREC's Adult Tea Dances are held every Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00p.m.-3:00 p.m., in BREC's Administration building (Ballroom) located at 6201 Florida Blvd.. Refreshments and live entertainment are provided. The cost is just $4.00 per person. Special themed Holiday Tea Dances are offered eight times a year for no additional cost. Red Stick Croquet Club
This high-spirited group gets together every Wednesday and Saturday mornings to play croquet at City Park, 1442 City Park Ave. Beginners welcome to join the group. Please call (225) 926-4659 for more information.

Where Dreams Come True...and Tramps to Kings

We depart Baton Rouge to the New Orleans Museum of Art to tour, "Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales of Walt Disney Studios!" This major exhibition features more than 600 original artworks that shaped the legendary animated features including Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, "Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales of Walt Disney Studios" also will include artwork from the upcoming Walt Disney animation musical, "The Princess and the Frog," an animated comedy from the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, set in New Orleans and due for release during Christmas 2009.

After our tour, lunch is included at an area restaurant. Then our touring continues to another special exhibit: "From Tramps to Kings," presented by the Presbytere, a Louisiana State Museum. "From Tramps to Kings," features more than 100 seldom-seen treasures loaned by Zulu members. Highlights include a ballroom tableau of 14 former Zulu Kings and Queens in bejeweled costumes and elaborate headdresses and all seven of Zulu's comic parade characters including Big Shot of Africa, the Witch Doctor and the Ambassador. The tour also includes the permanent carnival exhibit Mardi Gras at the Presbytere!

Jim Henson's Fantastic World Exhibit

An early, delicious lunch is planned at Dinner Bell Restaurant in McComb, MS. After lunch, we continue to Jackson, MS to the Mississippi Museum of Art.

Jim Henson's Fantastic World, a new exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES) and The Jim Henson Legacy, offers a rare peek into the imagination and creative genius of this multi-talented innovator and creator of Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and other beloved characters.

The exhibition features 100 original artworks, including drawings, cartoons and storyboards that illustrate Henson's talent as a storyteller and visionary. Among the variety of exhibition objects are puppets and television movie props, photographs of Henson's early career and experimental films. This is a self-guided tour.

Wicked!
Join BREC's Adult Leisure Program on March 25, 2010 and travel to the Mahalia Jackson Theater for Performing Arts in New Orleans to view the Broadway smash hit, Wicked. The bus will report to BREC's Jefferson Hwy. Center, 8133 Jefferson Hwy., at 10 a.m. and will depart Baton Rouge at 10:30 a.m. The group will have lunch at Cheesecake Bistro in New Orleans for noon before arriving at see Wicked for a 2 p.m. performance. The bus will return to Baton Rouge after the show at approximately 6 p.m. The price for this trip is $131, which includes bus transportation, lunch at Cheesecake Bistro and Wicked!

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the Land of Oz. One girl is born with emerald green skin, smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other girl is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked is the story of how these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

On Broadway, and around the world, Wicked has worked its magic on critics and audiences alike. Winner of 26 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is one of Broadway's biggest blockbusters.

Mackinac Island

We board our fully-equipped Motorcoach and journey to Northern Michigan, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way before checking into the en route hotel that evening. Day two takes us to the Cedarhurst Museum with dinner and check-in at our en route hotel later in the day. We drive into Northern Michigan on the next day and check into the hotel for a four-night stay.

For the next few days, enjoy many of the beautiful sites Michigan has to offer. We will experience a guided horse and carriage tour through Mackinac Island, take an exciting cruise to the Soo Locks, and spend some free time in Sault Sainte Marie watching ships sail through the Locks or browsing the local shops and boutiques. We will also take a guided tour of Mackinaw City and visit the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, dating back to 1892. We will see the inspirational attraction "Cross in the Woods," a bronze image of the crucified Jesus, created by Marshall Fredericks. Our last couple of days include trips to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum.

On day nine, we will depart for Baton Rouge. The drive home will be a perfect time to chat with friends about all the beautiful sites we have seen and the fun things we have done!

Alexandria Tour
Tour includes a visit to the Southern Forest Heritage Museum, lunch at Lea's Lunchroom, a visit to the Louisiana Maneuvers and Military Museum & Mt. Olivet Pre-Civil War Church and Cemetary.

The Southern Forest Heritage Museum, located in Long Leaf, LA is the oldest complete sawmill facility in the South. It's a complete saw mill complex dating from the early 20th century. It has the most complete collection of steam-powered logging and milling equipment known to exist. You can see three locomotives, a McGiffert Loader and a Clyde Rehaul Skidder. In addition, one can see many artifacts that were left in place when the mill closed Feb. 14, 1969.

Lea's Lunchroom, located in Lecompte, LA, serves southern, country food including homemade pies and baked ham. It is one of the oldest restaurants in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Maneuvers and Military Museum is a museum complex, located at Camp Beauregard, which pays tribute to the continuing partnership between the military and civilian community in central Louisiana. Prior to and during WWII, soldiers trained at Camps Beauregard, Polk, Livingston and Claiborne during the Louisiana Maneuvers.
