Swamp Flashlight Night

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

We welcome you to enjoy the Swamp at night by visiting us during our Swamp Flashlight Night! Staff will be facilitating live animal encounters througout the event. Enjoy a leisurely night hike with your family and friends. The swamp trails can be really dark at night – so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. If you don’t have one, check out our gift shop for some options. Close-toed shoes and insect repellant are recommended. Please note that admission to the trails ends at 8:15 p.m.

Teen Pop Up and Unplug

Every second Saturday of the month from December to April, teens will get a chance to decompress and engage in fun physical activities while practicing social distancing with BREC on The Geaux & Health and Wellness activities with Our Lady of the Lake Health Centers in schools. Some activities include Fitness Bingo, Ninja Course, musical activities, and more! This is a FREE event. Pre-registration is free, but you must register to secure your spot!

Saturday Morning Studio: Sustainable Sculptures

Saturday Morning Studio is GOING GREEN! These environmentally mindful classes are the perfect combination of art and FUN! Join us each month for tips, treats, and creative expression through green projects designed to enhance art skills while learning the importance of sustainability – all guised under a party atmosphere!

Black History Month Part 1

Independence Park Theatre

This year, in light of Covid-19 restrictions, Part 1 will be a Virtual Program airing on Facebook and Channel 21. The Outdoor Virtual Viewing will be held in the parking lot of Independence Park Theatre at 6 p.m. and viewers can watch from their vehicles and receive complimentary refreshments. The program will include performances from Forest Heights Academy of Excellence, McKinley Middle Magnet School and Louisiana Leadership Institute Band.
This year’s celebrations will curate artistic expression by celebrating African American medical professionals and frontline workers. We will honor Dr. Leon Kraft, Dr. Irene Evuleocha and Dr. Janet Cook for their relentless work in the medical field and being present-day heroes in the community. This event is also sponsored by Imagination Leads, City of Baton Rouge, and Bonton and Associates.

Adaptive Sunshine Social

Get ready to join the party at BREC’s Virtual Adaptive Sunshine Social in partnership with Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge. Teens and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities are invited to join the party every third Friday of the month from 6-8 p.m. Participants can log in and listen to their favorite tunes and dance the night away with their friends!

Black History Month Part 2

Independence Park Theatre

Part II continues the celebration with a Day of Health and Service on February 20 from 9 a.m.-noon at Charles R. Kelly Community Center’s back lawn area located at 3535 Riley Street. Community members are asked to come exercise, view the Walking Art Museum honoring medical presented by local artists, and donate for Our Lady of the Lake Covid Unit and Children’s Hospital.

Geaux Fish Catfish Rodeo

Howell Community Park

Grab your fishing pole and head out with the family to GEAUX Fish! Our Geaux Fish Rodeos are a great opportunity to introduce new anglers to the sport of fishing or for the old veteran to test their skills. We will be stocking the pond with adult channel catfish to ensure you have plenty to catch and prizes galore. Don’t miss this chance to bring home channel catfish for dinner and spend the day outside with the family. This event is weather dependent. Space will be limited for this event, so early registration is required for this event.

Art unWINEd: Beatnik Art

Tired of the same ol’ paint and drink?! If so, then check out BREC’s adult- only, fun and creative grown-up time outs. Each of these classes are designed to encourage and inspire while enjoying beverages and nibbles. All art supplies, nibbles and wine included. Great for friend get-togethers, bridal parties, corporate team building or just making new friends! Private ART UnWINEd bookings are also available. Must be 21 to join the fun.
Beatnik Art!
Hip, cool and mid-modern is what we are celebrating in this fun retro class. We will honor the Atomic Age of art by recreating a geometric mid-century piece that pays tribute to the simple designs of an era that brought us streamline architecture, rock n’ roll, tv dinners and Jello! Suggested menu: Martinis and 50’s style hors doeuvres. Class taught by local artist, Jeanna Esser.

Homage to a Hero - Harriet Tubman

Why Harriet Tubman? This brave woman was an American abolitionist born into slavery, After she escaped she made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people using a network of safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage. BREC Art salutes this brave, strong fighter of freedom and equality.
Students will paint an impressionistic portrait of Ms. Tubman using acrylic on canvas.

Guided Trail Rides

Farr Park Equestrian Center

Guided trail rides are available on select Saturdays and Sundays. Enjoy a one-hour gentle ride through the park on one of our horses. No experience required. Trail rides are by appointment only, and all riders must be at least 6 years old. Rides will be held rain or shine. Inclement weather trail rides will be held in the indoor arena.
