On Sept. 28, the Baton Rouge Zoo welcomed the first black rhino baby in the zoos 39-year history. Now, we invite you to name her! The rhino naming contest begins Nov. 9. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Nov. 20.

10.22.09 - Baton Rouge Gallery's Saturday Morning Cartoons Workshop Teaches Drawing Techniques to Youth
Have you ever wanted to create your own comic strip? If so, then register for Baton Rouge Gallery's Saturday Morning Cartoons, a workshop that teaches youth (ages 8-13) basic drawing techniques, how to draw people, animals and various characters. The workshop is scheduled for three consecutive Saturdays (Nov. 7, 14, 21) from 9:30 a.m.-noon at BREC's Womack Administrative Building, 6201 Florida Blvd.

09.29.09 - Black Rhino Born at BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo
BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is pleased to announce the first rhino birth at the Zoo. Gemstone, a 21-year-old black rhino, gave birth to a calf on Sept. 27. This important birth is the only black rhino born in North America and one of only three black rhino births in the past 12 months, worldwide.

Baton Rouge is being awarded Honorable Mention in United States Tennis Association's (USTA) 2009 Best Tennis Town contest. The city was also selected as one of 10 finalists in this national contest.

05.29.09 - Construction Begins on BREC's Forest Community Park --Fitness Trails, Spray Pad & Fishing Pond Included in the Design
On Monday, June 1, BREC, the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge, invites the public to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for BRECs Forest Community Park, 13900 S. Harrell's Ferry Rd., located just south of Millerville Rd. and Interstate 12. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the grassy area in the center of the park where the road splits to a one-way loop.

02.06.09 - New Dog Park Under Construction
East Baton Rouge Parish residents love dogs. A 2001 survey showed that for every 100 households, there are 79 dogs. These residents with four-legged family members will be pleased to know that a new BREC Dog Park is under construction. The new dog park is being built at Burbank Park, 12400 Burbank Dr., which already houses 12 tournament-ready soccer fields.
