PARTNER NEWS--Selection Committee for Knock Knock Children’s Museum chooses Architect

The selection committee for Knock Knock Children's Museum, located in City-Brooks Community Park, met on March 28 to review presentations for the Museum's building and exhibit design. Knock Knock Children's Museum will be large-scale children's museum with 18 - 20 hands on exhibits that engage children in learning through play. The Portico Group, a Seattle-based firm, was chosen to bring provide schematic design for both the building and the exhibits.

The committee heard presentations from three groups. "These groups are all top of the line designers and all propose connections to East Baton Rouge Parish firms," said BREC's Superintendent, Bill Palmer. BREC's Assistant Superintendent, Ted Jack, also commented saying, "All of the presentations were very good, which made this decision a difficult one for the committee."

A sampling of  Portico's projects include work for the LSU AgCenter's Burden Research Center -Baton Rouge, LA; Kid's Quest Children's Museum - Bellevue, WA; Kidspace Museum - Pasadena, CA; Hands on Children's Museum - Olympia, WA; and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Visitor's Center.

"Bringing a new children's museum to a community is an amazing thing to do, and an honor for us as designers.  With eyes and ears open, we will bring our knowledge of how other communities approach similar goals.  We will work to merge our experience with the local community's goals so that together we create a design and center that is truly unique and would not belong anywhere else," Alissa Rupp - Principal, The Portico Group.  Portico Group plans to work closely with Baton Rouge firms CSRS, Inc. and AST-Engineers and others as the scope of the project evolves.

BREC entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement with Knock Knock Children's Museum and is supporting the project with $3 million.  BREC and Knock Knock will be coordinating initial planning meetings with the Portico team very soon that will embrace local community participation including children and their families as well as community leadership.

The mission of Knock Knock Children's Museum is to create a world-class museum, delivering extraordinary play experiences and programs to inspire and promote the young children's intellectual curiosity, self-expression and early literacy development.
