Mark Your Calendars for Rockin' at the Swamp March 10
EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH—Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center (BSNC) will host its third annual Rockin' at the Swamp event Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at BSNC, 10503 N. Oak Hills Parkway.
This rockin' event provides visitors the opportunity to explore the vast world of geology, and includes activities and displays about rocks, gemstones, minerals and fossils. In addition to hobbyists featuring hands-on exhibits, vendors will sell rough and polished mineral specimens and fossils.
Other thematic elements include a gold mine, geode-cutting station, treasure trail, stone craft corner, rock-climbing wall and event souvenir buckets.
At the "gold" mine people can hunt the perfect pyrite specimens for their collection. At the day's end, children, ages 12 and younger, will enjoy the kids gold rush, which will allow younger children to go for the gold and clean out the mine.
Visitors at the geode-cutting station will have the opportunity to pick their own geode and have it split right before their eyes to reveal the crystalline treasures within.
Along the treasure trail, experienced fossil hunters and beginner rockhounds alike will take to the trails to hunt for stations where they will collect specimens for their own gemstone identification cards.
Children and adults can use their creative talents to produce one-of-a-kind pet rocks at the stone craft corner. These colorful stone turtles, river stones provided by Jim Stone Company, come to life with vivid shades and patterns added by visitors.
Mark your calendars for March 10, get ready to rock out, and celebrate the vast world of geology at Rockin' at the Swamp.
Admission is $4 for children, ages 2-17; $5 for adults; $2 for BSNC pass holders; and free for children, ages 2 and younger.
