BREC to Host Open House at Expressway Park

BREC will host a community open house at Expressway Park, located at 935 South 11th Street on May 2 from 4 -6 p.m. in order to show residents in the area the conceptual Master Plan for improvements to the park. The Master Plan was developed after discussing options for park renovations with area residents, downtown development planning groups and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

BREC is working with the Downtown Development District (DDD) in developing renovation plans for Expressway Park to make sure they align with planned improvements which will be funded by a Recreational Trails grant the DDD has secured to construct The Downtown Greenway, a bicycle and pedestrian path which will eventually connect City-Brooks Community Park to Memorial Stadium. The path will go through Expressway Park.

Residents can come to the Expressway Park recreation center any time between 4 -6 p.m. to look at drawings illustrating the Master Plan, discuss their ideas with BREC Planning and Engineering staff and to fill out a survey which will help determine the final decision. Renovation construction could begin this summer.

Expressway Park sits on land which belongs to the Department of Transportation and Development under the Interstate 10 and Interstate 110 split between downtown and Old South Baton Rouge. Amenities include a playground, picnic areas, recreation center, indoor and outdoor basketball, and an unlighted baseball field and football field.

Renovations to Expressway Park will be funded through the "Imagine Your Parks" tax plan passed by East Baton Rouge Parish voters in 2004.
