BREC to Host Volunteer Appreciation BRECfast on Nov. 22
Local Chef Chris Wadsworth Partners with BREC to Celebrate Volunteers
BREC has partnered with local chef Chris Wadsworth, owner of Triumph Kitchen, to host an appreciation breakfast to recognize the hundreds of outstanding volunteers and their invaluable contributions and support of BREC’s public parks, recreation facilities and programs throughout the parish. The Volunteer Appreciation BRECfast will be held on Fri. Nov. 22 at 7:30 a.m. in the Womack Ball Room of BREC’s main office building, located at 6201 Florida Blvd. All registered 2013 BREC volunteers and groups are invited to attend the event. “We have so many wonderful volunteers who work with us each year to help bring our programs to life. We’re pleased that we will be able to recognize their contributions through this volunteer appreciation event, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Chef Chris Wadsworth to make it possible,” said BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight. “This special breakfast is just a small way for us to thank them for their service and commitment to BREC, and to let them know that we recognize that we could not provide the countless number of programs and events for the citizens of East Baton Rouge parish without their help.”
Currently, BREC has more than 1,400 registered volunteers who donate approximately 22,000 hours of service annually. Volunteers range from school-aged students to a large number of retirees, who spend their time giving back to the community through BREC’s designated volunteer opportunities.
While honoring all participants who have volunteered at BREC during the past year, BREC will also make special presentations to eight exceptional groups and individuals who have gone above and beyond in their volunteerism efforts to support specific programs and special facilities. The eight special awards include: Outstanding Golf Marshal, Outstanding Athletics Volunteer, Outstanding Volunteer Group, Outstanding Wellness Volunteer, Outstanding Zoo Volunteer, Outstanding Magnolia Mound Volunteer, Outstanding BREC Foundation Volunteer, and Outstanding Special Facilities Volunteer.
Chef Wadsworth is preparing a true southern Louisiana breakfast for attendees. Chef Wadsworth is the former chef for Restaurant IPO and he has been named one of “Padma’s Picks” on Top Chef New Orleans as well as a “Chef to Watch” by Louisiana Cookin’ magazine. Chef Wadsworth is currently in the process of opening a non-profit cooking school for at-risk youth called Triumph Kitchen. BREC plans to partner with Triumph Kitchen and their students during future BREC special events.
“We’re excited to be partnering with great Baton Rouge organizations such as BREC. Partnerships like these make for a strong joint effort in bettering the lives of all citizens, especially our youth, throughout our city and parish,” said Chef Chris Wadsworth.
