BREC Begins Final Push for Public Input to Create New Strategic Plan

Imagine Your Parks 2: Better Parks – Better Living

The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) will hold nine more community meetings starting tonight through March 20 to gather input about the future direction of the park system.

The meetings are the last in a series of 34 public forums held since mid-January to give residents a chance to learn about the progress BREC has made through the first Imagine Your Parks strategic plan, vote on ideas to move the system forward in the next 10 years and weigh in on the types of improvements they’d like to see made in their area parks.

The final meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the following locations:

Tues. March 11 – Howell Community Park, Santa Maria Golf Course and Jefferson Methodist Church

Thurs. March 13 - Bluebonnet Regional Library, Cedar Ridge Avenue Park and Church Street Park

Tues. March 18 – Monte Santo Park and Lovett Road Park

Thurs. March 20 – Independence Community Park (Main Library large meeting room)

Every 10 years, BREC creates and implements a strategic plan to guide the progress of the system. Imagine Your Parks 2: Better Parks, Better Living will be implemented in 2015 and guide agency improvements through the year 2024.

The first Imagine Your Parks strategic plan is nearing completion and resulted in the transformation of an aging system into one that now features 12 new community parks, five dog parks, Liberty Lagoon Water Park, skateboard parks, fishing ponds, a new conservation area for hikers and nature lovers, improved playgrounds, a growing trails system, a mobile playground unit as well as renovated neighborhood parks and special use facilities.

BREC is also utilizing an online tool called MindMixer for people who aren’t able to attend the meetings or who would like to participate in all phases of the planning. More than 1,200 people have visited MindMixer so far and submitted more than 100 ideas regarding the future of the park system.
