BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo
SESSION 1: CONTINENTAL DRIFT
Pack your bags, we’re off to see the world! We’ll visit six of the seven continents as we meet creatures from around the globe!
May 29-June 2 / Ages: 5-7
SESSION 2: HOME SWEET NEST
If home is where the heart is, does your heart snuggle up in a den? A burrow? A nest high in a tree? Let’s explore where animals go to feel “no place like home.”
June 5-9 / Ages: 5-7
SESSION 3: FEED YOUR FACE
It’s a protein/fat/carbohydrate buffet—for our Zoo animals! We’ll serve up some educational appetizers and find out who eats what (or who) when it’s dinner-o’clock!
June 12-16 / Ages: 8-10
SESSION 4: IN THIS CORNER…
Claws. Teeth. Strength. Speed. Camouflage. In the day-to-day battle for survival, campers will look at what skills and characteristics animals bring to the ring, and may be able to answer that age-old question: Who would win in a fight?
June 19-23 / Ages: 8-10
SESSION 5: THIS IS HOW WE ZOO IT
The three purposes of Zoos are conservation, education and recreation. It takes a lot more than shovels and hoses to keep our Zoo up and running daily. In this week, campers will take a deeper look at all aspects of zoo keeping structure, conservation efforts, enrichment and the general day-to-day life of our Zoo family.
June 26-30 / Ages: 11-13
SESSION 6: AWESOME ADAPTATIONS
Adapting to new things can be hard. We’ll show campers how the pros in the animal kingdom constantly adapt to their ever-changing surroundings. Campers will learn some of the characteristics and behaviors that wild animals use to thrive in their environments.
July 3-7 / Ages: 5-7
SESSION 7: OFF THE DEEP END
Campers will dive into the deep, dark, mysterious depths of the underwater world. We will discover all that aquatic life has to offer as we delve through the oceans, rivers, lakes and swamps. No landlubbers allowed here!
July 10-14 / Ages: 5-7
SESSION 8: CLOCKWISE
Most people go from sunrise to sunset, with work hours of nine to five. If you’re an animal, your schedule may be different! Many animals certainly benefit from sleeping and waking at “odd” hours of the day. Campers will pick apart how an animal’s daily routine may differ from their own.
July 17-21 / Ages: 8-10
SESSION 9: LIVING ON THE DOCK
We are Louisiana, home to many a swamp and wetland critter. Nutria and gators, fried fish and ‘taters! Me oh my! Campers will get a little lagniappe about the wildlife and culture that makes Louisiana home.
July 24-28 / Ages: 8-10
SESSION 10: BEHAVE YOURSELF
Campers will jump into the fun, fantastic and sometimes confusing world of animal behaviors. Using our own Zoo animals as examples we will get a better understanding of how smells, tastes, sounds and visual cues help animals on their quest for life.
