Busy Bodies

Busy bodies are a program where seniors enjoy doing exercise with an instructor while using chairs, weights, strength bands, and balancing bars. This program addresses some of the major wellness components needed for optimal health. These areas include strength, flexibility, balance, cognition and nutrition.

Sunshine Club

What do you do after graduation? You walk on Sunshine, of course! The Sunshine Club is here to help bridge the gap for adults with Intellectual and developmental disabilities by offering not only recreational experiences but life skills and volunteer opportunities. We learn how to be productive members of the community while exploring and learning new things with a bit of fun thrown in the mix. All incoming participants need an assessment and registration can be done by Recreation staff.

Little Adventures

We offer a Parent Day Out program that gives children ages 3 to 4 the opportunity to experience a new adventure each week through the power of play. The recreation curriculum focuses on socialization, creativity and exploring your interest through play. Thursdays / Sept. 1-Dec. 22 / 9 a.m.- noon

Warmth of the Earth Pottery Program

Use your hands to get creative while shaping and molding clay into beautiful pieces of artwork. Basic pottery techniques are introduced where participants will be allowed to create, paint, and glaze their individual pieces. Afterschool Adventures

Afterschool just got a little more adventurous! Introducing our new afternoon recreation program for youth ages 6-12. We will focus on fitness, health, Steam activities and 21st Century Skills. Daily programming will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m with one extended, enrichment day which will end at 7 pm (days for an extended time may vary). Our enrichment days will include field trips, guest speakers and special programming to provide unique experiences for participants. We will work with local school districts to provide transportation to our Adventure locations. Monthly fees include daily after-school programming including early release days. The optional, extended service offering will be provided for teacher workdays and participants will also receive benefits of early bird registration and discount rates for our holiday camps when enrolled in the current monthly programming. Antioch starts on Aug 8 Zachary starts on Aug 9 Lovett Starts on Aug 11 Monday-Friday / 3:30-5:30 p.m.

BREC offers a safe place with structured activities that regularly convene the hours after school which offers different activities such as homework time, physical activities, healthy snacks, and a variety of monthly themed activities. English + Western Riding Lessons

Learn how to ride a horse or improve your skills. Farr Park offers riding lessons to students ages 6 and older at all different levels, English or Western, taught by qualified instructors who specialize in their disciplines. Group and private lessons are available. Tuesday-Friday, year round Lesson Times: 4 p.m. + 5:30 p.m. + 7 p.m. / Ages: 6+ Group Lessons (no more than 5 riders): $27 EBR Parish residents $32 out-of-parish residents Private Lessons: $47 EBR Parish residents $56 out-of-parish residents

Art UnWined

Tired of the same ol’paint and drink?! If so, then check out BREC’s adult-only, fun and creative grown-up time outs. Each of these classes are designed to encourage and inspire while enjoying beverages and nibbles. All art supplies, nibbles and adult (or not) beverages included. Great for friend get-togethers, bridal parties, corporate team building or just making new friends! Private ART UnWINEd bookings are also available. Must be 21 to join the fun. This Fall’s Art UnWined themes have something for everyone!

Swamp Bird Walks

Join us for extended morning hours on the first Saturday of every month to check out the feathered friends that call Bluebonnet Swamp home. Led by a member of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society, visitors can enjoy a morning hike through the trails while identifying various bird species. Bird-watching techniques and identification tips are also discussed. Beginners are welcome. Field guides and binoculars are optional but recommended. Want a more hands-on experience with birds? Guided Trail Rides

BREC's Farr Park Equestrian center is proud to offer guided trail rides on select Saturdays and Sundays. Enjoy a one-hour gentle ride through the park or in the indoor arena on one of the BREC horses. This fun activity is perfect for families, groups, and friends. Trail rides are by appointment only, and all riders must be at least 9 years old. First Saturdays At Frenchtown

Start your month off on the right foot by spending a little time in nature at Frenchtown Road Conservation Area. These activities will focus on connecting both nature lovers and nature novices alike with the inner workings of the largest conservation area in the BREC Conservation system. Just like the site, activities and topics will change monthly. For November’s session, please sign up for the Revive Your Mind Hike. Saturday Morning Studio

Saturday Morning Studio is TRAVELLING AROUND THE WORLD! Each month BREC Art will “travel” to different countries to experience history, art, (and snacks!) from different cultures. Join us each month for tips, treats, and creative expression as we pack our art bags and see the world! $12 per class EBR Parish residents $14.40 out-of-parish residents Sept. 10: Mona Lisa Cat - In this session, the very little-known French portrait of the Mona Lisa Cat will be recreated with chalk and oil pastels. This “visit” to France will introduce students to the mysterious Mona Lisa painting, a stop at the Eiffel Tower and Macarons. Nov. 12: Mother’s Helper - Students will travel to Mexico City, Mexico where they will meet Diego Rivera. Bright colors, Hispanic culture and nachos will all be part of the fun as we recreate his famous Mother’s Helper using mixed media. Dec. 3: Gingerbread House - The German tradition of building gingerbread houses is still part of holiday traditions worldwide. After learning the origin of the gingerbread house and seeing different houses from around the world, we will build our own edible Gingerbread masterpiece!

BREC Beginnings

BREC offers this Mother’s day out type of program as an opportunity for children ages 3-4 to experience the power of play. The recreation based curriculum focuses on peer socialization, creativity, interest exploration and more. Staff will guide children through hands-on arts & crafts projects, sing-along songs, story time, physical activity, and more. Sept. 6-Dec. 16 Monday-Thursday / 9 a.m.-noon
