Trail Time for Toddlers

Trail Time for Toddlers is a unique opportunity for children, ages 2-5, and their parents or guardians to make new friends while learning about nature through trail walks and themed indoor and outdoor activities. Come enjoy the sights and sounds of the swamp, arts and crafts, storytelling, animal encounters and healthy snacks.

Friday Night Lecture Series

For almost twenty-five years this program has given patrons histories and possible futures. Skygazing tips, physics phenomena, space programs and famous events are covered.

Ages: 14+

STEM Expansion

This program offers advanced demonstrations, topic extensions and all-new games and activities to an older crowd. Certificates will be earned, and a section of archived experiments, some not seen in over fifteen years (and some never performed on site), take place. Engineering, early NASA missions and astrobiology are some of the programmed topics.

Ages: 12-16

Woods Walk Series: Blackwater

Satisfy your curiosity about the trees you see at BREC Parks and your wonder about the animals that call BREC Conservation Areas home. Join a BREC Naturalist for our Woods Walk Hiking Series and pick their brain about a broad range of topics. Each hike in the series will dive into different topics connected to these unique sites in East Baton Rouge Parish. Come to one or multiple hikes in the series to indulge in the great outdoors. Preregistration is required and an adult must accompany all children.

Swamp Haunted Hikes

Bluebonnet Swamp’s Haunted Hikes are designed especially for younger children. This program is an alternative to the commercial haunted houses, which are geared more for teenagers and adults. Participants learn about snakes, insects, rats and other “creepy critters” as they stop at educational stations along the trail. Track down costumed characters to receive “treasures” then trek through the Swamp Graveyard to our Education Building for Carnival Games and Spooky Storytime.

Solar Viewing

Weather permitting, personnel presents the Sun projected onto a white surface, directly via safely-filtered optical light and directly with a hydrogen-alpha telescope. Patrons are able to see any sizable sunspots or flares. Protective clothing and sunscreen recommended.

Urban Nature Hike Series: Wampold

Interested in exploring the nature oasis next door or looking to take your neighborhood walks to the next level? Our Urban Hike series is a great start! Geared toward nature novices of all ages, participants will enjoy a leisurely walk through a BREC park while learning some fun facts about the park’s natural areas and the fundamentals of adventuring in the great outdoors. Preregistration is required for all attendees and an adult must accompany all children.
