Interested in volunteering for Hearts and Hooves, but are nervous about the tasks or don’t fully understand the program? Come learn at Volunteer Orientation! All tasks and duties will be taught. Interact with our therapeutic horses, instructors, other volunteers, and some of the Hearts and Hooves students. Snacks and refreshments provided.

Backpacking 101

Have you always wanted to go back packing, but never felt you had to skills or experience to make it happen? Then join us for Backpacking 101. Our Outdoor Adventure staff will take you through the basics of being a successful backpacker and lead you on your first backpacking adventure at the culmination of our program. Learn how to plan your trip, properly use common back packing equipment, and then put your skills to the test on your first overnight backpacking adventure under the leadership of our experienced staff.

  • Baton Rouge Bicentennial Oak Dedication

    In partnership with BREC, The Baton Rouge Bicentennial Commission, The East Baton Rouge Parish Library System, and Baton Rouge Green, a Live Oak will be planted at Expressway Park in honor of Baton Rouge’s 200th birthday.

  • Highland Road Park Observatory Celebrates 20 Years of “Bringing Astronomy to the People”

    This year the Highland Road Park Observatory (HRPO) celebrates its 20th anniversary of “brining astronomy to the people.” The Highland Road Park Observatory is brought to the public by BREC, Louisiana State University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society and held its first public night in the Fall of 1997. The observatory houses a state-of-the-art 20-inch reflecting telescope, which has been used to discover more than 40 asteroids, and an accessible 16-inch reflecting telescope.
