News BREC Earns Numerous Awards and Accolades

Baton Rouge, LouisianaBREC proudly announces that numerous leaders, programs, and partners were recognized at the 2025 Louisiana Recreation & Park Association (LRPA) Annual State Conference, held November 18–20 in Baton Rouge. These honors highlight BREC’s ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, equity, and community impact across East Baton Rouge Parish.
Leadership Announcements
Katrina Coots Ward was elected as incoming LRPA President. Ward is currently serving as BREC’s Interim Assistant Superintendent of Recreation & brings 20 years of statewide leadership experience, a strong record in equity-focused improvements, and extensive community engagement expertise in her new role. Also, Dodi Falcon was named LRPA District 3 Chair. In this role, she will support regional collaboration and professional development across the district.
Innovation in Conservation Award
BREC’s Green Force received the Innovation in Conservation Award for increasing volunteer participation, expanding hands-on environmental restoration projects, and establishing a successful community-powered conservation model.
Award for Health Equity
BREC’s IYP3 System-Wide Master Plan was honored for advancing equitable park access through data-driven planning, prioritizing underserved neighborhoods, and embedding health equity standards across the system.
Innovation in Health Award
The Walls Project – Baton Roots at BREC’s Howell Park was recognized for its innovative approach to community wellness, combining urban farming, education, and workforce development to expand fresh food access and support healthier lifestyles.
Outstanding Young Professional Award
Sydney Parish, Outdoor Adventure Program Coordinator, received this recognition for her rapid professional growth, leadership across multiple BREC programs, and dedication to expanding outdoor recreation opportunities.
Individual Citation Award
Lillie Gallagher (Accepted by Stanley Springs and Peter Davis) was honored for outstanding leadership with Friends of City Park, including strengthening fundraising, partnerships, and community engagement.
“These awards reflect the talent and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners,” said BREC Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons. “We are honored to be recognized for work that strengthens communities and expands access to high-quality parks and recreation.”
