Baton Rouge, LouisianaEast Baton Rouge Parish voters renewed the Recreation and Park Commission’s 3.96-mill property tax Saturday, securing continued funding for the day-to-day operations, maintenance and programming of the parish’s parks and recreation facilities.
The renewal preserves BREC’s primary source of operating funds for 10 years, allowing the agency to maintain services at more than 170 parks and facilities without interruption during a pivotal moment in its history.
“Tonight’s vote reflects the high value this community places in its parks and quality of life,” said BREC Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons. “On behalf of BREC’s employees, volunteers, sponsors and community stakeholders, I want to thank the residents of East Baton Rouge Parish for their trust and support. Their vote of confidence allows us to build on the progress we’ve made and ensure that every dollar invested in BREC is used responsibly to serve our community.”
With the millage secured, BREC will continue advancing its community-approved master plan to modernize and upgrade the parish’s parks system under the leadership of incoming Superintendent Brooks Williams, who assumes leadership of the agency in August.
