Geaux Green with BREC
Geaux Green with BREC
BREC strongly believes in conservation, preserving green spaces and promoting responsible use of resources. As part of Geaux Green efforts, we educate residents about the importance of recycling, fighting litter and how we can work together to make East Baton Rouge Parish a better and more sustainable place to live.
Geaux Green Committee
BREC's Geaux Green Committee serves to develop and implement the Environmental Sustainability Policy. This policy outlines BREC's steps to become environmentally responsible. BREC's sustainability policy is centered on reducing waste, reusing resources and recycling--the three Rs. The committee engages and educates BREC staff and citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish on how to integrate these practices into everyday life, starting with our parks and green spaces.
Geaux Green Committee Mission
It is our mission to create a vessel that promotes and initiates BREC's Environmental Sustainability Policy.
Geaux Green Committee Vision
Our vision is for BREC to become a leader in environmental and economic sustainability while operating within our budgetary restraints. To accomplish this vision we will:
- Educate BREC staff and patrons on WHY "Geauxing Green" is important and HOW to carry out BREC's environmental sustainability goals.
- Maintain and expand BREC's recycling program across East Baton Rouge Parish.
- Involve representatives from across the agency to identify and implement department-specific sustainable practices.
Environmental Sustainability Policy
BREC's Environmental Sustainability Policy establishes a framework to promote sustainable practices across planning, programming and operations. The policy outlines a series of strategic goals and actions to realize the organization's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Strategic Goals
- Environmental Stewardship: BREC will serve as stewards of the environment.
- Environmental Education and Interpretation: Increase knowledge and awareness of environmental sustainability in BREC staff and park users.
- Recycling: Expand BREC's recycling efforts by implementing the Geaux Green Recycling Program.
- Energy Conservation: Reduce BREC's energy consumption.
- Water Conservation and Water Quality Protection: Reduce BREC's water usage and improve the water quality in EBR Parish.
- Sustainable Design and Construction of Buildings: Integrate sustainable design and construction methods in our day-to-day operations of building and maintaining park land and facilities.
- Environmentally Preferable Purchasing: Increase purchasing of Environmentally Preferred Products (EPP's) and incorporate a sustainable mentality into current purchasing procedures.
- Monitoring and Tracking: Develop a means of monitoring our goals and tracking our achievements.
Recycling with BREC
Recycling, an important component of this effort, allows residents to become involved in keeping our parks both beautiful and litter-free.
Since 2014 BREC has expanded recycling efforts to include a single-stream recycling program at administrative offices and parks. Through this program, BREC diverts over 600,000 pounds of trash from local landfills annually. BREC also offers monofilament/fishing line recycling at all designated fishing ponds.
