Baton Rouge, LouisianaAs summer camp season approaches, BREC is expanding its youth offerings with the launch of a new Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for teens ages 14–17.
This new program provides a structured volunteer opportunity designed to help teens gain leadership experience while supporting camp staff and engaging with younger campers. Applications are currently open and will close on May 11.
“During the CIT program, participants will assist camp counselors with daily activities, including games, crafts, and outdoor programs, while serving as positive role models for campers,” said Dodi Falcon, BREC Volunteer Manager.
The program aims to foster responsibility, teamwork, and meaningful connections. Participants will complete approximately 80–100 volunteer hours throughout the summer, an experience that can enhance college applications and future resumes.
To apply, teens must:
- Submit a current report card (including GPA)
- Attach one teacher recommendation
- Attend one mandatory orientation session
Orientation sessions will be held May 21–23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applicants must attend one of these sessions to be considered for acceptance.
Placement at camp locations will be based on each applicant’s first and second choices. While opportunities are available across most BREC camp programs, certain facilities such as the Zoo and the Swamp operate their own separate, established programs.
“We aim to match participants with opportunities that align with their interests while ensuring a meaningful and engaging experience,” Falcon shared.
Once accepted, CITs will coordinate their schedules directly with their assigned locations to complete their required hours by the end of the summer.
“As a new program, some processes may evolve,” Falcon said. “This flexibility allows us to adapt and better serve both our participants and the community.”
The CIT program was inspired by BREC’s desire to provide teenagers in our areas with fun, safe things to do while creating lifelong skills that will connect them to their community through recreation.
